Onsite Lab Services

The onsite laboratory of Cancer Care Associates of York is committed to offering our patients the best experience possible as they seek the care of our medical team. From blood collection through test result, our aim is to provide results your healthcare provider can trust, quickly enough to be used during that day’s visit. Our staff is small but skilled, and we are eager to be a part of your care.  The onsite laboratory is conveniently located in Suite 196.

Routine tests such as a blood count, chemistry profiles, tumor marker testing and urinalysis are all performed in our office. Blood tests can be drawn prior to your office visit or we have a walk-in service between 8 am and 4 pm. Results are generally available for the Providers within 30 to 40 minutes. Any specialized testing that is not analyzed here will be sent to an outside laboratory.

Our onsite laboratory is CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and PA Department of Health certified.  We also participate in the Quality Control Program of the American Proficiency Institute. Our technologists have a degree in laboratory science and are ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certified medical technologists.

What to consider before you arrive;

  • If you have a history of fainting or other blood collection problems, please let us know. We trust you and will take extra measures to help guarantee a safe venipuncture.
  • Drink plenty of water before you arrive. Dehydration can make your veins harder to find and access.
  • We are unable to access ports or picc lines. Port access requires a nurse and is more invasive than venipuncture. If you are scheduled to be collected in the lab, it is because your provider wants to see your results to help with treatment decisions while you are still here.  We understand you may prefer your port to be used but trust that we work hard to provide as pain-free a collection as possible.
  • If you have lab tests ordered by another physician, we are happy to collect the necessary tubes at the same time we are collecting for our physicians. It is very helpful if you have a paper requisition from your other doctor, but we do have some ability to look up orders if you forget.
    • Depending on your orders, you may need to fast 8-12 hours. If you haven’t, the results will not reflect your true values and the doctor won’t have a clear picture of your condition.
    • We cannot legally draw your blood unless you also have tests ordered by one of our providers.

We understand that having blood drawn is a source of anxiety and stress for many people. While we can’t avoid all discomfort, our patients can feel confident they are being treated by caring professionals who can give them the best experience possible. We are proud to be a part of the Cancer Care team and look forward to helping you.
